Two Groups per Octave

The double thumb fingering reduces the number of finger groups per octave to two, and is generally a bit quicker and more convenient. The thumb needs to be able to move quickly and as seamlessly as possible from one note to the adjacent note once per octave. The challenges begin when we aim for a legato scale, and with the standard fingerings for double note scales a perfect legato is not always possible between both pairs of thirds.
