The first thing to become comfortable with in this opening section is the division of the melody between the two hands. We will therefore begin by playing only the melody and the bass line, leaving out the eighth-note accompaniment for now. Liszt understood very well that the thumb is the best finger for bringing out cantabile melodies in the middle range of the piano. Learn to play this melody fully and expressively, practising the smooth transfer from hand to hand, and incorporating the melodic nuances from the beginning.
